Camp Dick Robinson Elementary is utilizing a grant from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to enhance social-emotional skills among CDR students. The grant, initially established under the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund II (ESSER II), aims to create a supportive environment for students, particularly those with special needs, by establishing calming spaces within schools. This process began with the release of a Request for Applications (RFA) by the Kentucky Department of Education, signaling an opportunity for schools across the state to leverage funding to support self-management strategies for students. Camp Dick Robinson Elementary seized this opportunity, recognizing the potential to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. The grant, totaling $90,000, was designed to promote social-emotional well-being and enhance self-management skills among students. Camp Dick Robinson Elementary, along with only NINE other eligible schools, was granted the opportunity to receive $10,000 to establish a calming space tailored to the unique needs of its student body. One of the defining features of the grant is its emphasis on sustainability.

Camp Dick Robinson Elementary outlined a comprehensive plan to ensure the longevity of the calming space beyond the scope of the funding provided. This commitment to sustainability emphasizes the school's dedication to fostering a culture of support and inclusivity for years to come. Central to the initiative is the active involvement of students in the creation and upkeep of the calming space. By empowering students to take ownership of this initiative, Camp Dick Robinson Elementary is not only providing a resource for emotional regulation but also fostering a sense of community and responsibility among the student body. Camp Dick Robinson Elementary's commitment to social-emotional learning extends beyond the establishment of a calming space. The school has already implemented Tier 1 initiatives aimed at promoting social-emotional well-being among students.

In line with grant requirements, CDR meticulously outlined a budget that reflects the intended use of funds, ensuring transparency and accountability in the allocation of resources. The school's proactive approach to budgeting demonstrated its commitment to maximizing the impact of the grant funds received. With determination and dedication, CDR is paving the way for a more inclusive and empathetic educational landscape. With the $10,000 grant CDR established not just one, but two calming spaces within its school building. These spaces exude a serene ambiance, featuring plush carpets, soft lighting, lavender scents,, and an overall cozy atmosphere. Equipped with large bean pods, weighted blankets and stuffed animals, spin chairs, and an array of sensory items, these spaces offer students a refuge for relaxation and emotional regulation. Additionally, students can engage in creative activities with drawing/coloring materials, building items, while enjoying soft music. The creation of these calming spaces displays Camp Dick Robinson Elementary's commitment to nurturing the social-emotional well-being of its students and fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
